William J. Craig, 82, of Indianapolis, Hamilton County, passed away March 21, 2017. He was born on July 23, 1934 in Indianapolis to Everett and Nellie Pollard Craig.
Bill was a 1952 graduate of Carmel High School. He enlisted in the US Marine Corp on September 16, 1953 and served until his honorable discharge on September 15, 1956 when he became a Disabled Veteran.
Bill was a 2 time Past Master of the Carmel Masonic Lodge #421; he was also a lifetime member of the Noblesville VFW Post #6246 and RIPEA (Retired Indiana Public Employees Association.) Bill was a former member of the Indianapolis Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine as well as past President of the Hamilton County Shrine Club.
As a Brick Mason working for Avriel Shull, Bill helped build most of the homes in the early Thornhurst Addition. Other employers were CITGO Gas Station, which was owned by his uncle Emil Pollard and Henthorn Mower Service. Bill retired in 1996 from IUPUI, where he worked as a Locksmith.
Various hobbies kept Bill active. He was a bee keeper, wine maker and a skilled woodworker. Bill also enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting and cutting trees for firewood. He was known for his beautifully groomed yard and growing Indiana tomatoes. Bill received awards when he raced Go-Karts in Whitestown during the years of 1962 - 1964.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Cheryl (Sheri) Ann Bowman Craig; son, Joseph Lee (Julie) Craig ;grandson, Clint Collin Craig, granddaughter, Callie Jo Craig, step-grandson, Nick Ewins, step-granddaughter, Darsey Morgan, step-grandsons, Zachary Taylor and Dakota Duval; daughter, Lisa Marie Craig (Terry) Smiley; step-granddaughter Katelynn Smiley, step-grandsons, Kenneth (Samantha) Smiley and Bryce (Hayley) Smiley, step-granddaughter, Lillian Rose Hanson; step-great-granddaughter, Paisley Ann Smiley; sisters, Betty Craig Shawver and Barbara Craig Kelso; brother, Ben (Sue) Craig; 7 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather on Friday, March 24, 2017 at 2 pm. in the Carmel American Legion, 852 W. Main Street, Carmel, of which Bill was a longtime member. The Celebration of Life Service will begin at 4 pm, officiated by the Reverend Linda McCoy.
In memory of Bill, donations may be given to the Carmel American Legion Post 155, 852 W. Main Street, Carmel, IN 46032. Envelopes will be available at the service.
