Karen Sue Sweeney, 74, of Whitestown, IN, formerly of Owosso, MI, passed away April 1, 2017. She was born on September 23, 1942 in Owosso, MI, daughter of the late Ernest Dale and Mildred Mary Conrad Gulick. Karen also lived in several other cities including Valencia, CA, Colts Neck, NJ, Carmel, IN and Elsie, MI.
Karen was a 1960 graduate of Owosso High School and attended Flint Junior College and Mott Foundation, both in Flint, MI, taking 2 years of business courses. For many years, Karen worked for Mayflower Transit, the American Physicians Assurance Corporation and Wheaton Van Lines. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her sons, daughter-in-law and her two grandchildren, whom she adored and was lovingly known as Nana. She also considered her many friends and neighbors as family and greatly enjoyed spending time with them as well.
Karen had a passion for sewing, flowers and refinishing furniture. She enjoyed going to garage sales and resale stores in search of those pieces of antique wood furniture just waiting for her to bring them back to life.
In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by a brother, William E. Gulick and sister, Gail M. Gulick.
Survivors include her sons, Kenneth Sweeney and Paul (Donna) Sweeney; granddaughter, Elizabeth Sweeney; grandson, Elijah Sweeney; sisters, Brenda Moore and Linda (Dale) Goodwin; brothers, Terry (Peggy) Gulick and Fred (Ann) Gulick; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 12:00 noon in St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 17102 Springmill Road, Westfield, IN. Visitation will take place from 10 am until time of Mass.
Burial will follow in Our Lady of Peace cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Karen be given to Shepherd’s Gate Food Pantry at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church. Checks should be made payable to St. Maria Goretti, noting Shepherd’s Gate on the memo line. Envelopes will be available at the service.
