Obituary of William Dennis

William Joseph “Bill” Dennis, 79 of Sheridan, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, Sunday, April 23, 2017. Bill was born in Elwood, IN on October 13, 1937, son of Paul R. and Dolores Youmans Dennis-Targgart.

Bill was a Barber at Mosbaugh’s in Noblesville before owning his own shop in Westfield - Bill’s Barber Shop and later Just Haircuts in Home Place. He also barbered at Butler’s Shop in Carmel. For a number of years, Bill was employed as a trucking dispatcher for Farm Bureau Co-op, Schilli Motor Lines, Laker Express and Transcorr. Bill was a veteran of the US Navy Reserves, having served from 1955 to 1967.

The greatest joy and accomplishment in life for Bill was celebrating 58 years of marriage to Sandy and rearing 4 children, being a proud grandpa to 6 grandchildren as well as 9 great-grandchildren. Bill was a 1957 graduate of Westfield High School and recently, was honored as a Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.

Bill was an avid sports fan which included Friday evenings attending Westfield High School football games, traveling to Bloomington on Saturdays to cheer the Indiana Hoosiers, then watching the Bears and Colts on Sundays. Bill was thrilled to see the Cubs win the World Series.

Bill enjoyed spending hours on his Dixie Chopper mowing his lawn. He also enjoyed mowing and weed-eating at his church. Bill was a Gardner. He and Sandy planted “Ambrosia” sweet corn and “Rutgers” tomatoes in their vegetable garden. Last summer, Bill canned 95 quarts of tomato juice!!

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Paula Dennis-Hearn.

Survivors include his loving wife, Sandra Millikan Dennis; children, Jeff (Diana) Dennis, Dawn (Bennie Stamm) Dennis, Erick Dennis, and Dayna (George) Cancel; grandchildren, Brooke (Eric), Randa (Randy), Cassandra (Jacob), Christopher (Julia), Dimitri, and Bryce; great-grandchildren, Troy, Roy, Alex, Chloe, Ella, Caleb, Lilly, Taylor, and Lindsey; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family and friends will gather on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 9 am in the Sheridan Six Points Wesleyan Church, 1545 W. 226th Street, Sheridan, IN 46069, of which he was a member. The Celebration of Life service will begin at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations, in memory of Bill, be given Sheridan Six Points Wesleyan Church. Envelopes will be available at the service.
