Obituary of George Moorhous, Jr.
George W. Moorhous, Jr 92, of Carmel, died April 24, 2017 at IU North Hospital. He was born March 14, 1925 to George Moorhous and Martha (Girth) Moorhous and was raised in Monon, IN where he graduated from Monon High School.
George was employed as a train conductor for the Monon Railroad and later Amtrak, working for the railroads for more than 45 years. His assigned route primarily traveled from Chicago to Indianapolis and it was while working on that route that he met his wife, Ruth. They were married on November 18, 1956 and were married for 60 years.
George’s memberships included Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Home Place Lions Club, and the Carmel Masonic Lodge. He also was a Marion County Master Gardener.
George was a huge fan of baseball and softball and served as an umpire for many years. He was selected to umpire at the World Softball Tournament in FL during the 1960s and was voted into the Softball Hall of Fame. He was also a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs and Purdue University sports.
George enjoyed gardening and serving as a volunteer, including spending time at Heartland Growers where he was a tour guide for a number of years. He was twice selected Hamilton County Volunteer of the year.
The greatest joy for George was spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his oldest son, George W. Moorhous, III; two sisters, Evelyn Pilson and Miriam Clark.
Survivors include his loving wife, Ruth Theis Moorhous; two sons, Greg (Kathy) Moorhous of Arcadia, IN and Scott (Deana Stewart) Moorhous of Tipton, IN; a daughter-in-law, Cathie Moorhous of Morton Grove, IL; grandchildren, Justin Moorhous , Fishers, IN; Erin Moorhous , Indianapolis, IN and Kelly Moorhous , Arcadia, IN; four step-grandchildren, Dan Rose and Sean Rose, both of Chicago, IL and Kelsey Stewart and Preston Stewart of Tipton, IN; and four step-great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 10:00 am in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church where the service will follow at 12:30 pm. Burial will be at Carmel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 445 E. 111th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46280. Envelopes will be available at the service.
